Google talk audio, Video chat was made available as a part of android 2.3.4 Gingerbread update to Nexus S users, the same apk is now hacked to be installed on any Rooted Android phone/Tablet with minor tricks.

How to install Google Talk Video, Audio on Any Android Phone, Tablet

Pre-requisites:

1. Unzip the downloaded Google talk zip file and connect your phone/tablet to PC/mac.

2. Run the following commands using the adb:

adb remount
adb shell mv /system/app/Talk.apk /system/app/Talk.apk1
adb uninstall com.google.android.talk
adb push libtalk_jni.so /system/lib/
adb push Talk2.apk /system/app

3. That’s all, you should now have Google Talk with video installed, try it out and have fun.

If there is a problem, you can uninstall it by:

adb remount
adb uninstall com.google.android.talk
adb shell mv /system/app/Talk.apk1 /system/app/Talk.apk

Troubleshooting: If it doesn’t work, uninstall it and flash this zip on CM7. For other ROMs flash this zip instead. Make sure you take backups first.

Tested, Works on Cyanogenmod 7.

I installed this on my Droid with Pete’s GPA14 (stock 2.3.3 Gingerbread), and the app works fine, except when I try to do video or voice chat, in which case, the respective module crashes (though the text chat stays open).

I realize this was probably never meant to run on my phone, but I thought I’d give it a try. I hoped that maybe the voice chat would work…

I put this on Chevys GB 5.3 with his latest kernel for OG droid.  I was able to get video chat to connect.  I could see the other person’s video fine however they could not see mine.  The audio worked fine during the video call both transmitting and receiving.  I tested just straight up audio chat and it worked fine as expected.  If nothing else it is a nice free voip service for the OG droid :P

I put this on an HTC Glacier (MyTouch 4g) and got the same result as Sdafds entry above.  Audio worked fine for both people.  I could see my friend, but my friend could not see me.  He saw only black.  I saw myself on my end in the little self-view window, so my camera is working.  I didn’t see any options that may have interfered with this.  I also tried from a pc to my phone with the same issue.

I have Cyanogenmod 7.1.0 RC1 Experimental ROM installed

On this HTC Desire Z with CyanogenMod 7.0.3 audio works perfectly (which was my main goal), and video works halfway like reported by other commenters: I can see video from the other side, but they can’t see my video.

Thanks for posting this howto here!

Normally I wouldn’t comment on posts but I felt that I had to as your writing style is actually good. You have broken down a tough area so that it easy to understand.
