The original Galaxy Tab aka Galaxy Tab 7 gets an unofficial AOSP port of android Ice cream sandwich 4.0, and it just works.

Originally, Samsung deprived Galaxy tab 7 of Honeycomb 3.x update, bu thanks to the developer community, we now have 4.0 running on Galaxy Tab.

Two other developers Angel_666 and koudaxi were responsible for the first alpha build while ani55 added a couple of libraries to the ROM to make the camera and sensors work.

Install Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich on Galaxy Tab

Note:  This is an alpha build, not everything works. Your device should be rooted with a custom recovery like Clockworkmod and you should be on Gingerbread-based bootloader with EXT4 file format.

In god we trust, for others there’s nandroid. Take backups.

Step 1: Download the latest build of Ice Cream Sandwich for original Galaxy Tab and transfer the .zip to the root directory of Galaxy Tab.

Step 2: Boot into recovery: Either use ROM manager or use key combiantion to boot into recovery.

Step 3: In recovery, format /system, /data and /cache from mounts and storage.

Step 5: Wipe data / factory reset from main menu. and “choose zip from sd card” that you downloaded.  Let the Ice Cream Sandwich flash on Tab. Reboot when done.

Voila! Galaxy Tab will now boot into an alpha build of Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich.
