Facebook Messenger started a new concept of Facebook Messenger heads that provide an interactive and non-obstructive way of delivering notifications to you.

Instead of hiding notifications in the notification bar, you can get them as floating Notification ChatHeads right on your Homescreen. Thanks to XDA developer crazyfool_1, the app delivers chatHEads like floating notifications for every android app out there.

On first run, you will have to enable it from accessibility settings, when prompted (System Settings -> Accessibility -> Floating Notifications – Turn it on). Then you can simply configure what all apps would you like to see floating chat head notifications for. You can also configure which Notifications stay there even after you’ve read them, and which ones show complete history of notifications. You can also configure apps that are enabled to have replies.

The app is very neat and handy for just about anyone. You need no root access for this, the app works with a charm. We had been playing with this app for a while and feel this is what Android notifications should have been like.

Checkout a brief overview of floating android notifications in this video:

The Doom 3 port doesn’t scale down graphics, and it runs decently well on modern Android phones. In our tests it ran smooth on Dual core Galaxy Note N7000 and super smooth on Note II, Nexus 10.

In our gameplay we found Doom 3 to run fine most of the time. There were few snags here and there but nothing that would make it a no go. The Onscreen controls are not great for FPS gaming, but they work. If you happen to have MOGA controller or PS3 or Xbox controller, pair that to this game and you can have lot of fun.

Doom 3 Gameplay on Android:

The Game port has been work of a russian developer who claimed to have spent months of effort to port the game to ARM.

Google had opened up access to limited set of developers like Flipboard, which had been using and helping Google improve the Youtube API. YouTube native API for Android is finally out, and it hopes to simplify all types of YouTube integrations.

YouTube player API offers these benefits:

High-quality video playback supported on Android 2.2 (Froyo) or newer

Easy integration with your Android application (no WebView required)

Fullscreen and orientation change support

Closed captions display

Support for YouTube ads

Programmatic access, similar to existing Player APIs, to most aspects of the YouTube video playback experience

Integration with the Android YouTube app using a standard set of YouTube Intents.

Apps like Flipboard, BuzzFeed, 9x9TV have already been using the Youtube Player API.

How to get started with Youtube Player API for Android

Step 1. You need a API client library available at download page along with JavaDocs.(JavaDoc reference)

Step 2. Register your application in Google API console and obtain API key that would need to use in the app. (How to)

Step 3. Go through sample applications that describe the API usage in all video embedding formats.

Available samples:

Video Wall

Simple PlayerView

Simple PlayerFragment

time make -j8 SystemUI

SystemUI source code for AOKP, CM 10.1

Source code for JB MR1 AOKP

Source code for JB MR1 CyanogenMod

Step 1.

Navigate to src/com/android/systemui/statusbar/phone/QuickSettings.java, and you will see two options to create a Toggle:

1. addSystemTiles:380 – Static tiles with useful information.
2. addTemporaryTiles:571 – This type of tile will get removed without activity, for example, the alarm quick setting is a temp tile.

Lets talk about the first option in a bit of detail.

Method definition for addSystemTiles:

        // CpuInfo tile
        QuickSettingsTileView cpuInfoTile = (QuickSettingsTileView)
                inflater.inflate(R.layout.quick_settings_tile, parent, false);
        cpuInfoTile.setContent(R.layout.quick_settings_tile_cpuinfo, inflater);
        cpuInfoTile.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
            @Override
            public void onClick(View v) {
                startSettingsActivity(Intent.ACTION_POWER_USAGE_SUMMARY);
            }
        });
        mModel.addCpuInfoTile(cpuInfoTile, new QuickSettingsModel.RefreshCallback() {
            @Override
            public void refreshView(QuickSettingsTileView view, State state) {
                ImageView iv = (ImageView) view.findViewById(R.id.cpuinfo_image);
                TextView tva = (TextView) view.findViewById(R.id.cpuinfoa_textview);
                TextView tvb = (TextView) view.findViewById(R.id.cpuinfob_textview);
                Drawable d = mContext.getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.ic_settings_performance);
		String GOV = fileReadOneLine(GOV_FILE);
		String FREQ = fileReadOneLine(SCALE_CUR_FILE);
                iv.setImageDrawable(d);
                tva.setText(GOV);
                tvb.setText(FREQ);
                view.setContentDescription(
                        mContext.getString(R.string.accessibility_quick_settings_cpuinfo, GOV));
            }
        });
        parent.addView(cpuInfoTile);

Step 2.

The second part is updating the Toggle with a Widget view. You can view other definitions in here to update various states.

Nexus 10 kicks some solid ass, with state of the art 300ppi display on a large 10″ screen. Thats way higher than anything we had ever seen on screen of such a size.

To unleash the full potential of the device, one must Root it. Although there are several ways to root Nexus 10, One-Click root for the Nexus 10 works on Windows, Linux and Mac OSX.

The OneClick root method uses Superboot, the same tool that roots wide variety of devices including Nexus 7, HTC One X, etc.

Superboot pushes a custom boot.img file onto the device that automatically installs su binaries and the Superuser APK upon the first boot.

What you need:

Superboot r4 for Nexus 10.

Android debugging enabled in Settings. Checkout How to enable developer options in JB 4.2

Phase I:

Unlock Nexus 10 Boot Loader

Before Rooting Nexus 10, you must unlock the Bootloader.

Step 1. Download and install Android SDK.

Step 2. Turn off device and boot into Bootloader mode by holding on to hold volume-up, volume-down and power buttons.

Step 3. Connect your device to your PC via USB and wait till any drivers are installed, which should happen automatically.

Step 4. Now go to command prompt / terminal interface on your computer and type following command:

fastboot oem unlock

Once this is done, your phone will show a screen that will prompt you regarding unlocking bootloader. Read through the instructions carefully and confirm by pressing volume up button followed by the power button.

Voila! You will now have Bootloader Unlocked.

Phase II:

How to Root Nexus 10

Step 1. Turn off your NExus 10, and then lets get into Bootloader mode by pressing volume down and volume up keys pressed, hold down the power button and connect Nexus 10 to your Computer.

For Windows
Run ‘superboot-windows.bat’ file.

For Mac OS X
In terminal, execute following command in the extracted folder:

chmod +x superboot-mac.sh
./superboot-mac.sh

For Linux (Ubuntu, Solaris, Unix etc)
In terminal, execute following command in the extracted folder:

chmod +x superboot-linux.sh
./superboot-linux.sh
After executing, reboot the device and it should be Rooted! The Superuser app should be available in launcher for future SU authorizations.

Enjoy your Rooted Nexus 10!

Hopefully, Google will open source it to the community, and we will see a wide adoption of Android 4.2 among ROMs like Cyanogenmod, ParanoidAndroid, etc.

If you’re a developer, you probably had hard time figuring out what happened to the “Developer Options” in Settings. Google has decided to hide this option by default and focus more on the user, perhaps. Since most users would never understand what it is about, it better off hidden, under the hood.

How to Enable Developer Options, USB Debugging on Android 4.2 JellyBean

Step 1. Go to settings > about

Step 2. Repeatedly click the Build version item, and within a matter of seconds you’ll see a Toast that claims, “You’re now a developer”.

Step 3. You should now see “Developer Options” in the settings list as second last item.

-

You can now enable USB debugging under Developer options.

Official Android 4.1.1 JellyBean for Galaxy Note 1 has been leaked to the interwebs and the ROM is super fast and stable. If you love the Touchwiz and samsung’s stock feel, this ROM is what you need.

The ROM is XXLS2 Stock Samsung Galaxy Note. It packs latest Galaxy Note apps from Galaxy Note 2 including the new gallery and S-Pen features.

ROM has very minor hiccups, which are absolutely fine to live with.

How To Install Offical, Stock Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean on Galaxy Note

Step 1. Download ROM and save to a place in your Windows PC.

Step 2. Make sure you are on a rooted ICS-ROM or JB-ROM with CWM recovery and brickfree kernel installed. IF you’re not already, then you need to Root your Galaxy Note and install CWM recovery. You can install ICS on Galaxy Note or find a guide for Rooting on XDA.

Step 3. Copy the downloaded ROM on your Note’s SDCARD.

Step 4. Boot into recovery from your ROM OR Power off then hold Power + Volume Up + Home key. Leave the Power Key after you see Galaxy Note N7000 screen. You should now enter the Custom recovery menu.

Step 5. Wipe/Factory data reset your phone (yes this will remove all your data in phone memory)

Step 6. choose Flash Zip from Sdcard, and browse to the location where you copied the JellyBean ROM.

Step 7. On Reboot, you will boot into Stock Jelly bean. Now open Super SU-app and you might have to update SU-bin (app will do that for you if necessary!)

Voila! Enjoy the Stock JellyBean Android 4.1.1 on Galaxy Note.

Update: Troubleshooting:
- Fix Root issue with moving apps to SD here
- Fix SMS app here

But once in a while, it doesn’t hurt trying new things on your phone.

Apple endorses good UI with a big ego, how about exploiting that? What if you can copy the iPhone’s Photos app and bring it Android just for fun.

Time to give it a try, and bite that Apple.

The iGallery app brings iOS 6 like Photos app on Android. The app is free and feature rich and yet delivers superb performance under all situations.

We had a chance to play with the app and we were more than satisfied with the speed. App does lack NAtive Holo ICS feel, but thats all you can expect from an app that mocks another platform.

How about Running Qbasic code on Android?

If you’re learning QBasic or love to have it around, its time that you start using QBasic on android, on the go. QBasic, is an IDE and interpreter for the popular BASIC programming language. One of the most powerful programming languages of the 80s.

The 80′s language would give any old geek a nostalgia. You can get QBasic running on any android using aDosBox.

Developer fotak-x has written a guide on how to use the free DOS emulator aDosBox to get QBasic running on your Android device.

How To Run QBasic, Basic programming IDE on Android

Step 1. Download and install aDosBox from Play store.

Step 2. Open aDosBox and press Menu button > SDL settings > Video settings > On-screen magnifying glass.

Step 3. Download QBasic exe from here (yes EXE from windows world).

Step 5. Launch aDosbox and type

cls

mount d: /sdcard/qbasic

d:

qb.exe

and QBasic now appears on your screen, Happy coding!

TIP: We recommend using hacker’s keyboard from play store for best keyboard experience.
If you want to learn QBasic, here is a Tutorial.

You might have been enlightened by Galaxy S3′s Floating Video player which lets you Multitask. Same multitasking video player was made available in Galaxy Note 10.1 and Galaxy Note II.

You can now get the same multitasking video player on any Android phone, Tablet. The app is called Popcorn Player and has native Holo UI to bring ICS, JB feel to every device.

Among other apps, we recommend Super Video Floating & Popup and MoboPlayer by Mobo Team apps that let you do something very similar with slightly different interface.

Popcorn Player is a new floating video player in Play Store, and yet deserves to capture the flag. The apps is easy to use and yet very intuitive. Popcorn Player plays local content as well as streams from the web in high definition. You can drag and resize the window to suit your needs, anywhere on the screen.

App is compatible with Android 3.0+ devices, that and hence embraces Holo UI. Among video codecs, it plays MP4, webM and variety of other video formats. The app makes it possible to play video minimized, one thing you cannot do with any other app.

The app is ideal when you’re trying to Multitask a video while reading something off the web or browsing the web while searching for stuff. I use the app to watch the keynotes, lectures while i surf the web on my tablet or Galaxy note. App is suited for large screen devices, however, there is no restriction. A simple double tapping lets you switch between flaoting window and fullscreen mode and back.

You can even stream youtube videos using this app and enjoy Floating window youtube videos while you Multitask. It automatically monitors clipboard and offers to play a youtube video when url is copied from browser or anywhere within android os.

The app was tested on Transformer prime (ICS) and Galaxy Note 4.1.1, and we love the way app performs while multitasking. There were little snags while using it on Galaxy SII, but most of the time it delivered smooth experience.

Koushik Dutta, Founder of CWM recovery, has come up with a tool to help you create Flashable Zip files for Android.

He believes, if you give the power to the users, they can bring in innovative ideas and they can create interesting flashable zips.

The app that lets you create update zip files is available via ROM Manager or through the online interface. (This will be available soon as per the time of writing).

As Koush explains:

you can modify /system and boot/kernel to your liking, and just make a zip using this new feature…it doesn’t include /data and /cache. No personal data is stored in /system.

Essentially, you can do a lot of things, customize the ROM how you want it, use the feature, and then you have a flashable zip with your set up either to share with others or to flash whenever you need it. Since the zip doesn’t contain the /data partition, there are no concerns related to privacy, its free to distribute.

ClockworkMod Recovery 6 would have it integrated.

Jellybean aka Android 4.1 is now stable for Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 8.9. Its available in two flavors:

JellyBean AOSP (Stock look)

CM10 Cyanogenmod 10 version for Jellybean.

What ROM should you choose?

The answer depends on your taste. If you love modding and custom ROMs, with non-stock UI, go for CM10. However, you love pure Google Experience with Holo UI, AOSP ROM is for you.

What may also add to your decision making is the fact that on the Galaxy Tab 8.9, the AOSP ROM is more stable whereas CyanogenMod 10 is more stable on the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Both have them are not perfect, but they work well.

If you’re the type who likes to stay ahead of the curve, checkout the download links below.

Among the several popular additions to Jellybean, one that users would love instantly is the new revamped Notifications system.

There are 3 new classes Notification.InboxStyle, Notification.BigPictureStyle & Notification.BigTextStyle which which helps us in creating notifications with larger content area & picture review.

Lets get it rolling with Few examples of Code that bring you to speed with JellyBean. You can create a notification using NotificationManager, like you always used to:

Original way of Pushing simple notifications in Android:

/**
	 * Push a simple notification (old way)
	 */
	private void pushSimpleNotification() {
		Notification notification = new Notification(
				android.R.drawable.ic_menu_camera, "Hello camera!",
				System.currentTimeMillis());
		notification.flags |= Notification.FLAG_AUTO_CANCEL;
		notification.number += 1;

		Intent intent = new Intent(this, MainActivity.class);
		PendingIntent activity = PendingIntent.getActivity(this, 0, intent, 0);
		notification.setLatestEventInfo(this, "title", "content", activity);
		notificationManager.notify(0, notification);
	}

Big Picture in Notification Area can be shown with the following code:

	/**
	 * Big picture notification!
	 */
	public void pushBigPictureNotifications() {
		Builder build = new Notification.Builder(this)
				.setContentTitle("You got mail")
				.setContentText("email subject")
				.setTicker("This email has photo")
				.setSmallIcon(R.drawable.ic_action_search)
				.addAction(
						android.R.drawable.ic_btn_speak_now,
						"Speak!",
						PendingIntent.getActivity(getApplicationContext(), 0,
								getIntent(), 0, null))
				.addAction(
						android.R.drawable.ic_dialog_map,
						"Maps",
						PendingIntent.getActivity(getApplicationContext(), 0,
								getIntent(), 0, null))
				.addAction(
						android.R.drawable.ic_dialog_info,
						"Info",
						PendingIntent.getActivity(getApplicationContext(), 0,
								getIntent(), 0, null));

		Notification notification = new Notification.BigPictureStyle(build)
				.bigPicture(
						BitmapFactory.decodeResource(getResources(),
								R.drawable.jellybean)).build();

		notificationManager.notify(0, notification);
	}

Big Text Notification can be shown with this code:

	/**
	 * Big notifications
	 */
	public void pushBigTextNotification() {
		Builder builder = new Notification.Builder(this)
				.setContentTitle("New mail from me").setContentText("subject")
				.setSmallIcon(android.R.drawable.ic_menu_agenda);
		Notification notification = new Notification.BigTextStyle(builder)
				.bigText("This Notification can actually get very big and still contain all of the text. It's amazing how Jelly Bean notifications work!")
				.build();
		notificationManager.notify(0, notification);
	}

Gmail like Inbox multiple notifications collapsed into one area:

	/**
	 * Inbox notifications
	 */
	private void pushInboxNotifications() {
		Builder builder = new Notification.Builder(this)
				.setContentTitle("10 New emails for me")
				.setContentText("subject")
				.setSmallIcon(android.R.drawable.ic_menu_agenda);

		Notification notification = new Notification.InboxStyle(builder)
				.addLine("line1 text")
				.addLine("line2 text")
				.addLine("line3 text")
				.setSummaryText("+7 more")
				.build();
		notificationManager.notify(0, notification);
	}

The Project butter surely makes Jellybean tasty and attractive and Cyanogenmod 10 would be the first ROM to bring it to variety of devices.

Development of CM10 as already begun and making significant progress every night. First nascent version of Jellybean falvored CM10 is already showcased on LG Optimus phone.

CyanogenMod’s Ricardo Cercuiera tossed a video of an early CM10 build on his YouTube page, declaring “it lives!” The early build is running on an LG Optimus 4X HD, and runs through unlocking the screen and recording and playing back a video. The build is still having some trouble with Google’s revamped search integration, but considering Android 4.1′s source code was released only days ago, the quick development is promising.

He also quotes:

Note: The point of the preview isn’t as much the specific device, I’m just trying to point out that we can actually get CM10 to do things now on devices that aren’t named “Nexus”

So we know that CM10 beta and stable builds aren’t that far. Although it involves a lot of work to port AOSP Jellybean to a lot of devices, as per Steve Kondik, but the team is working day and night to make it possible. Hats off to the brilliance of Open Source.
