So you were enticed by Google Voice search / Google Now on Jellybean and can’t wait to get Jellybean on your device.

Well, we’ve a hack that will let you install Google Now on any Android ICS AOSP ROM.

The Google Now compatibility has been reported differently by various users.. Ideally it should work on all AOSP ICS ROMs, some custom skinned ROMs users are reporting issues with installation. Give the following steps a shot and see if it works for you:

Download: Google Now APK

Step 1. Rename the APK to GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk
Step 2. Using any file manager (e.g. ES file manager) Go to System/App and rename the original GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk to something else or delete it.
Step 3. Copy in the GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk the one you renamed from (Velvet-theos0o.apk)
Step 4. Set the permissions, to the /System/App/GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk to RW-R–R–
Step 5. Reboot and you’re all set to use Google Now Jellybean search on your ICS phone.

What Works:

  • searching through the text-box works
  • location services work
  • info cards work

Not working:

  • Can’t exit the app using the back button on the Google Now ‘Cards’ screen
  • Sometimes cannot submit a typed search-query
  • Voice search (Jelly Bean kernel-specific)

If you’ve problems, report issues at xda forums
